Description
The historic Gay Head Lighthouse is still functioning as a beacon to mariners and is operated by the U.S. Coast Guard. It was moved from its original location in June of 2015 further away from the cliff which was eroding away. The conical brick structure stands 51 feet tall and was originally built to serve mariners and whalers and steer them away from hazardous Vineyard Sound waters near the cliffs. It was an area known as Devils Bridge. The first Gay Head light was authorized during the presidency of John Adams in 1798 and it was first officially lit on November 18, 1799.
