The Kissing Sailor Statue, also known as "Unconditional Surrender" or "Embracing Peace" Statue is located in Tuna Harbor Park, San Diego. It is a replica of the famous photograph of a sailor kissing a woman in New York's Times Square --in 1945, celebrating the end of the war with Japan. Other versions of the statue reside in various cities around the country. Cities such as Sarasota, Florida, New York City, Key West, and Pearl Harbor have all had versions of the Unconditional Surrender statue on display at one time or another.
But the San Diego kissing sailor statue is the most iconic, since it’s been there for many years and because the city is known for its large naval base. The 25 foot high statue sits across the inlet from the famous US aircraft carrier USS Midway --now a museum.
