Description
but more commonly known as Gay Head Cliffs of Martha's Vineyards. The name was changed to Aquinnah in 1997 but most of the natives still call it Gay Head the original name which was descriptive of the colorful cliffs. The original inhabitants of the area were the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head. The native Americans living here were the very first whalers in the region...setting out from the shore in small boats armed with harpoons. This was long before the 19th century when whaling became the major industry of Martha's Vineyard. The Wampanoag Tribe considers these cliffs to be sacred and forbid people from climbing or touching the clay.
