Description
The beautiful clay cliffs of Gay Head on the southeast end of Martha's Vineyard are a National Landmark and rightly so. While the name of the surrounding area is officially "Aquinnah" habits die hard and many still fondly call it Gay Head...a descriptive name given the area by its early explorers...referring to the brilliant colors of the cliffs. Settled by Wampaoag native Americans, the area was one of the earliest sites of whaling in the states. The tribe is related to the larger Algonquin Nation. At the foot of the cliffs is Moshup's Beach named for a former tribe leader. The Tribe considers the land and the cliffs as sacred land and climbing them is forbidden. Whatever the name, the cliffs are strikingly beautiful and admired by all who visit.
