Description
I absolutely love the village of Varenna on the eastern shore of Lake Como. Varenna to me represents "Old Italy"....it's a place where time stands still. It sort of reminds me of how the east and west coasts of Florida used to be in the 60's. In those days, the east coast was bustling every second of the day. Traffic was constantly heavy and everyone always seemed to be in a hurry. Quite the opposite was true on the west coast of the state where the pace was so much slower...more tolerable and certainly more enjoyable. That's the way I found Varenna to be. Everyone seemed more pleasant, more friendly than say in Bellagio across the water or in Menagio. In Varenna, we continually ran across little restaurants up alleyways where the food was great and there may have been only one person running it. He welcomed you in, took your order, cooked it and delivered it to your table. He was also the cashier. He was the friendliest restaurateur I have ever encountered. Granted we were the only people in the restaurant at first and only one other couple came in while we were there. Don't know what would have happened if a part of 12 came in. Thankfully, I'll never know for sure. There were beautiful walkways, lined with flowers, little harbor areas filled with boats, boutiques and quaint little shops. It was just a delightful place to walk, eat and shop.

Hey, Thanks Candy. I really appreciate your comments. I've always like how the village seems to just pop out of this scene...I think it's the yellows being illuminated by the morning sun that does it.

This is very cool, Dave. It's a beautiful image and II love the contrast of the mistiness in the sky, the background mountains and the quiet water, against the brightness of the nearest mountain and the town's buildings. We've traveled throughout Italy, but have never been to Lake Como. Our son and his girlfriend go often and say we HAVE to go. (We will, I hope someday, if we live through all this stuff.) l/f
